Healing the Healer Mentorship Program: A Message for Prospective Mentees

Updated: Sep 8, 2022

If you know me then you know I'm not impulsive, at least not in my middle age. I'm driven by the guardianship, direction, love, care and support of in-order ancestors and elevated elders. This explains why I moved halfway across the country to the bear-filled rocky mountains without having ever visited the place before. I wasn't doing so on a whim or just taking a huge leap of faith; I dreamed of the territory I'd be on and the house I'd live in for months, if not years before I followed the ancestral-led vision. I'm glad I did because it was one of the best "decisions" of my life.

The ancestors never fail to amaze me. They continually grow hope in our hearts and bestow miracles in our lives.

Moving to the "middle-of-nowhere" isn't the only thing that has given me peace, joy and whole-being security--after all, wherever you go, that's where you are!-- In "doing the work", I've been able to dream again and end generational survival mode cycles. "Doing the work" was hard, really hard, but it saved my life.

(Of course, my racial, socioeconomic and various other kinds of privileges have mainly made this possible. These privileges have also afforded me internal and external access to resources allowing me to address intergenerational trauma, the ability to follow through and commit to my gifting, taking up pain and wounds and moving through childhood abuse and debilitating illness.

The bravery, courage, commitment and discipline to face deep-seated pains, truths, needs, and wants, and to do what was required of me, for me, was a long and very hard road, and support was hit and miss.

I have a grasp of what's missing in the healing arts, psychotherapy offices, doctor's offices and so-called spiritual spaces, not just because of my own experiences but also as a result of working with different folks as a healer, educator and activist in various settings in Southern Africa and Canada for over two decades. (Read here for more info about my professional experience.)

Life being what it is, we are frequently--willingly or unwillingly--standing on and leaping over many precipices. Healing is on a continuum, which we hopefully move through with self-patience, self-compassion, commitment and self-kindness.

The healing process can demand EVERYTHING of us towards meaningful growth and change. Many of us healers are super stubborn and are learn-the-hard-way folks (which at times has served us and kept us alive thus far.) Over time, many of the beliefs, behaviours and narratives that helped us to survive through distressing events and experiences--now limit our growth, capacity, interrelationships and life purpose. We may be unintentionally getting in our own way.

The reward of "doing the work" and claiming healing is experiencing a lighter load, a much clearer understanding of who we truly are and what we're here to do, clarity about our relationships and what we need. Also, improved communication, boundary-setting, self-acceptance and integration of selves.

It's also imperative in our healing process to be accountable. How did we get here, at this moment, situation and experience? I don't support the notion that "you're responsible for everything that's ever happened/happening to you". I'm more invested in your response-ability, from where you are right now to tend to yourself, care for yourself and invest in yourself, better.

You have a calling, we all do, take the time to get clear on what yours is and the next steps to pursue it.

If you're called to hold space for others, to help and be of service, you can't do that effectively until you've spent some meaningful time with yourself, engaging and reclaiming your whole-being/s. To do this you need to be willing to go to the roots, the heart of the matter and see, feel and understand your history, experiences, gifting, wounding, power and purpose. The medicine is in you, I promise. This also means that you are willing to accept help from in-order folks--peers, a mentor, a God of your understanding, healthy ancestors and more.

This is not a self-help, instant fix, new-age spirituality program. The Healing the Healer program is for the brave, courageous budding or established healers, helpers and empaths who need tending and are willing to put in the time and work for a better life and path.

Our world will be healed by the grief work we do in the late hours of the night, by the rituals we conduct at the waters, the ancestrally-channelled poems, songs and art we create, being clear on and expressing our needs, hopes and wants, and setting healthy boundaries, as well as deeply caring for ourselves and being cared for by others.

You matter. Your embodied pain, experiences, knowledge, intuition, kindness and unique spirit matters. It's time to see and be seen, feel and be felt. Know and be known. Welcome home.

This program isn't about churning out devotees and creating a flock of sameness drowned in spiritual ego. Healing the Healer is about "doing the work" with trustworthy, loving, caring and authentic guidance, care and support.

As a result of the many experiences I've had in my life, I found it very, very, very hard to trust. I understand the needs that go with trust/mistrust, and the challenges when it's absent.

Our one-on-one work is about creating place and space for cultivating trust (in self and others), respect (in self and others), and shifting our pain and wounding through individualized healing and care methods. Your needs are different and you should be met where you are as you are, right now.

By investing in ourselves and our healing, callings and paths, we inform drastic change in our inner and outer worlds. This has been my experience in my personal healing work, and as a traditional healer, counsellor and educator for 25 years.

My path, this work, isn't a business. I'm not marketing to "attract big numbers"--if this program is right for you and I'm a good fit for you and your ancestors; you will feel it and know it. If you're interested, let's schedule a chat, so I can get clear on your hopes and needs and also provide you with more details about the program.

As I want to see folks go through profound and long-lasting change, I keep the Healing the Healer program small. I work closely with each of you--by hand and heart--to be responsive to your process. This takes time, effort, care and other resources on my part and yours. Therefore, only folks that are truly ready, willing and able should participate in this 6-month mentorship program.

"Doing the work" is pain with a purpose, but this time, you won't be alone.

I quit my day job (lecturer in a Social Service Worker Program) to offer this support to folks. This healing work is central not only to my calling but to my day-to-day life. Therefore, I require committed mentees only for the Healing the Healer Program.

(* Note, this program is not training folks to be Zangoma, however, it may be useful pre and post-training as a healer in a specific culturally appropriate and relevant tradition.)

If you feel you are ready, willing and able and want healing, get more info here. You can also reach me directly to set up a chat to learn more.

A deposit of $300 Canadian is required by August 16th, 2022 to secure your place for the start date beginning the second/third week of September 2022 (the start date will depend on mentees' schedules.) Full payments are preferred but a monthly payment plan is also available. I do not have subsidies at this time but am working on it. If you are not able to participate in this program but are in a position to donate, please do, all proceeds will go to a BIPOC and/or 2SLGBTQ+ mentee's enrollment.

I look forward to supporting you in the

Healing the Healer Program:
